300 MW / 4 hour, Victoria
Heywood Battery Energy Storage System (BESS)
The Heywood BESS is an early-stage battery proposal located one kilometre north of the Heywood Terminal Station in southwest Victoria. It is approximately 5 km from the town of Heywood and 300 km west of Melbourne.
The BESS is anticipated to have a capacity of up to 300 MW / 1200 MWh and provide up to 4 hours of energy storage.
The Project will provide additional storage and stability to the electricity grid, helping to lower wholesale electricity prices. It will support Australia’s energy transition by storing excess energy during periods of overproduction or low demand. When demand surges, these stored resources can be discharged quickly to meet the higher electricity needs, mitigating supply demand imbalances.
Key Project Info

Project Approvals
The Project is in the early design and planning phase, with technical assessments underway across a broad range of considerations. These investigations will inform the concept design and support a planning permit application, to be lodged in 2025.
The Project will require other approvals, including grid connection and a cultural heritage management plan.
Atmos is committed to ensuring the Project considers, addresses and mitigates relevant considerations and risks.
Please see the timeline below for a high-level overview of key project phases.

Community Benefits
The Heywood BESS will bring significant economic activity to the Glenelg Shire area. In particular, the project will generate:
- Employment opportunities – A peak workforce of approximately 100 – 150 jobs will be generated during construction and there will be ~2 full time ongoing operational jobs
- A boost to the regional economy and business through local procurement and activity
Atmos will create a community benefit sharing framework, to provide funding towards local causes. We want to hear from you, to discuss your ideas and feedback on opportunities for community investment in Heywood and surrounding areas.
Community and Stakeholder Engagement
We are committed to engaging with nearby landowners, businesses and the broader community, as well as other stakeholders and First Nations groups.
We will be hosting an information stall at the Wood, Wine & Roses festival on Saturday February 22 and look forward to discussing your questions, ideas and feedback on the proposal.
We want to ensure the Heywood BESS benefits the local community and value your input this early in the project concept.

Local Contractor and Supplier Opportunities
We have a robust local engagement strategy and we are committed to creating jobs for local people and engaging with Indigenous and local suppliers. Whether it’s earthworks, infrastructure, building contractors, machinery operators and engineering, or accommodation, administration, catering, freight and cleaners – a number of skills and suppliers will be required during the construction phase of the project.
The proposed project will be delivered for and on behalf of Atmos via ‘main contractors’. The main contractors will be responsible for subcontracting a range of skills and suppliers. As part of our key objectives for the project, Atmos will continue to work closely with its main contractors to ensure the delivery and quality of opportunities for local and First Nations peoples and suppliers.
We encourage local suppliers, businesses and job seekers to register their details if you would like to be included in opportunities to supply goods and services for consideration by our main contractors.
