Atmos’ first greenfield development to enter the construction phase
SYDNEY, 30 June 2025: Atmos Renewables is proud to announce that financial close of the Merredin Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) has been achieved, marking a significant milestone as the company’s first greenfield development to enter the construction phase. Upon completion, Merredin BESS will become Atmos’ eighteenth operational asset, its first in Western Australia, and its inaugural BESS project, further diversifying the company’s growing renewable energy portfolio.
Located approximately 8 km southwest of Merredin in the Wheatbelt region, the 100 MW / 400 MWh BESS, co-developed with our WA-based joint venture partner Nomad Energy, will provide four hours of dispatchable energy storage. The facility is strategically positioned midway along the 650 km Muja to Kalgoorlie 220 kV transmission line, supporting grid stability and energy security for the Wheatbelt and Eastern Goldfields regions.
“The Merredin BESS exemplifies our commitment to delivering reliable, clean energy solutions tailored to the needs of Western Australians,” said Nigel Baker, CEO of Atmos Renewables. “This project not only supports the state’s renewable energy targets but also strengthens the resilience of the local energy infrastructure.”
The BESS will connect to the South West Interconnected System (SWIS) via Western Power’s Merredin Terminal Station. It is expected to be the first project in Western Australia brought to construction under the Australian Government’s Capacity Investment Scheme, aimed at achieving 82% renewable energy by 2030.
Construction will be led by GenusPlus Group and the project will utilise Tesla Megapacks with grid-forming ready inverter technology. Western Power will manage the high-voltage connection works to the Merredin Terminal Station.
“The Atmos approach is grounded in integrity, safety, and a long-term commitment to the communities in which we operate,” added Baker. ” Merredin BESS is an important step towards a low carbon future for Western Australia and we look forward to the safe and successful construction of the project in conjunction with our delivery partners.”
Supporting jobs and regional investment
Construction will begin shortly and is expected to create around 70 jobs during peak activity. Atmos Renewables is committed to engaging local businesses, First Nations suppliers and regional training providers throughout the project’s delivery
A voluntary Community Benefit Fund will be established to support health, education, environmental and economic initiatives in the Merredin region over the life of the project.
“Investing in the Merredin BESS is an investment in regional Western Australia,” added Baker. “Atmos is dedicated to partnering with local communities and suppliers to ensure the long-term success and positive legacy for all our projects.”
